The series is based on underlying themes of family and drug culture, and, ultimately, exposing the false stories of each author. The visual theme of spoons is used to convey the perception of being born with a silver spoon in one’s mouth, but is then contrasted by the destruction, emptiness, and ill will that results. Custom type is used for each title: “A Million Little Pieces” is drawn into spilled salt; “Love and Consequences” is cut from a map of L.A.; and “Don’t Ask Alice” falls into a slotted spoon, sieving out the author’s true identity.
